Home About Us
Opening in 1982, Horticultural Supplies was established as a wholesale business to service hardware and garden centre outlets with packaged goods from the mainland to distribute throughout Tasmania. It was taken over by the current owner in 1991 and from there began expansion by entering into agreements with mainland companies to package their potting mixes and fertilisers for them. In May 1992 the production lines opened and Horticultural Supplies began bagging premixed fertilisers, composts and potting mixes for distribution to the Tasmanian market.

This move accellerated the businesses growth and in July that year moved the office and warehouse from Central Ave in Moonah to Lampton Ave in Derwent Park where the production line was situated. But in 1995, council pressure due to Country Bake bakery moving in next door, meant that we were forced to move the production line and all bulk materials out to Lyell Hwy in Granton (next door to Barwicks Pine Bark Wholesalers).

This did not turn out to be a bad thing, the move to larger premises for our production lead us to manufacturing our own mixes from raw materials and introducing new bulk products. We also moved into the supply of commercial grade potting mixes to nurseries and fruit & flower growers. This was possible due to better equipment and improved procedures at the Granton depot.

July 10th 2001 was a major turning point in history, as the quality of potting mixes improved, Horticultural Supplies qualified to Australian Standards for quality procedures, being the first manufacturer of potting mixes, soils and composts to obtain the "Red Tick" of approval in Tasmania. These ratings are AS4743 Potting Mixes, AS4419 Soil for Landscape and Garden Use, and AS4454 Composts, Soil Conditioners and Mulches. This led to better consumer satisfaction knowing that Australian Standard garden products were now being produced in Tasmania.

Sales grew and this little statewide business once again got too big for its own shoes. In June of 2004, the office and warehouse started to move all operations from Derwent Park to a brand new warehouse in Brighton. All production and bulk supplies followed later in July creating a more efficient service for supply of our bulk and warehouse goods.

Today Horticultural Supplies has grown to one of the largest garden wholesale businesses in Tasmania, employing 13 people with representation in both the north and south of the state. Our product range includes some of the biggest garden suppliers from the mainland. Amgrow Garden King, Brunnings, Richgro, Moss, Scotts and Felco just to name a few and our customer base spans from plant growers and small independant nurseries to supermarkets and large chain stores including Mitre 10, Bunnings, Home Hardware and Plants Plus nurseries. We also package potting mixes, composts, mulches and fertilisers under contract for mainland companies Envirogreen, Grow Better and Fine Farms.
